Special Education and Child Find

Special Education and Child Find
Weld Re-8 School District is committed to identifying and providing appropriate services to all children within the district boundaries, from birth through age 21, who may be eligible for special education. This process begins at the preschool level through an initiative called Child Find.

What is Child Find?
Child Find is a mandatory federal program designed to locate, identify, and evaluate all children who reside within the district and who may have a disability that requires special education or related services. Our services are for children ages 3 to 5 who are not yet enrolled in Kindergarten.

If you have concerns about your preschooler’s development in areas such as:

Communication: Speaking, understanding language, or articulation.
Motor Skills: Walking, running, fine motor control (holding a pencil, using scissors).
Cognitive Skills: Thinking, problem-solving, learning colors, or counting.
Social-Emotional Skills: Interacting with others, managing emotions, or playing cooperatively.
Adaptive Skills: Self-help skills like dressing, eating, or using the restroom.

Weld Re-8 School District can provide a free developmental screening and, if needed, a comprehensive evaluation to determine if your child qualifies for special education services.

Special Education at the Preschool Level
Special Education for children ages 3 to 5 is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and is designed to address a child's unique needs in ways that prepare them for kindergarten and future school success.

If a child is found eligible for Special Education, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed. These services are typically provided within our integrated preschool classrooms at Little Trappers Early Learning Center or our elementary school locations, ensuring children learn alongside their typically developing peers.

How to Contact the Child Find Coordinator?
If you have a child who is between the ages of 3 and 5, resides in the Weld Re-8 School District, and you have concerns about their development, please contact our Child Find Coordinator to schedule a developmental screening or discuss the evaluation process.
