Find information, resources, and opportunities for your GT student
Welcome to the Gifted and Talented information site. We have great things happening in Weld Re-8 and excited about the direction we are going.
One big change for us was the addition of a Gifted and Talented Screening test for all students in second and fifth grades. It's called the NNAT2 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test). This screener helps us identify students that may not have been recommended to the program before for a variety of reasons. We are already seeing the results of the screener by doubling the number of students identified this school year from last year! We are also very happy to have the support of the Colorado Department of Education through a grant that provides funding for the screener itself and the administration of the test.
Another big change for us was being able to identify students in areas other than Math, Language, or Other. Again, the state has been very diligent and valuable in helping districts understand all the areas of giftedness, how to identify students, and how to provide programming to address students' strengths and areas for growth. We are now seeing students with gifts in music, art, leadership, specific academic aptitude (science, social studies, etc.), and creative thinking. It is a busy year for the building GT coordinators and myself, the GT team, but we are eager to take these changes and make them into successes.
We have continued to provide more enrichment activities for your child and work diligently in that direction. In the past year we have provided students the opportunity to explore their strength areas and move toward their goals through college fieldtrips, Mad Science classes/lessons during and after-school programming, and classroom pullout activities. Each school can attest to the individualized programming they have established based on the requests of the students. Activities like choir, art, chess, and other clubs, and providing time during lunch and after-school for Gifted and Talented student social interaction. We are working toward a clear line of communication between the district, teacher, student, and parent and plan to use this website often to achieve that need.
We look forward to partnering with you in helping your student explore their strengths and experience success at school and in life. Please don't hesitate to contact me at any time for more information or answers to your questions.
